Internationalization & Localization suggestions

22 Jun, 2011 09:55 PM

Hi there!

At first I want to thank you for this awesome plugin! I plan to release a shop website with it this fall so I am really interested in all further developments!

I am from Germany and have translated an alternate language file pack for German language because the one released today in the plugin is not very good and not fully translated.

You'll find my German file here for download:

My file is fully translated - I rescanned all strings!

But I found out that not all translated strings are displayed/ show up.
I researched in the plugin files and found out that often the text domain is missing: the language string is there but the domain "jigoshop" is not attached to it. Would please add the domain to all strings? Would be VERY HELPFUL!

And then it further seems that still a lot of strings and help texts in the backend are missing from localization at all yet...

Some more request:
On the product pages it says on every single product page "Posted in" and "Tagged as" - these are not localized yet but really import for international shops.

I guess I can make even more suggestions and help you with fine tuning for internationalization. I have some experience for a few month now with translating the "Genesis Framework", "Gravity Forms" and numerous WP plugins into German.

Some last question for today:
Is there any plan to release more payment gateways soon? As paid extensions of course!

THANX for any help and your hard work!

- dave from germany :)

@deckerweb, Great work! Indeed your translation is much better than the other one.

@jigoshop-team, Please don't take it as I'm not thankful for the localization by AlistarMclean, but Dave's translation make much more sense, some words where just translated word by word but having a different meaning in terms of online shopping or they sound a little bit awkward. Also his translation looks like completed, after using his files many English words were translated.

@deckerweb, I mentioned some payment option particularly for Germany on this post: maybe you can also add some ideas.

@jigoshop-team, unfortunately in Germany there are some rules, they have to apply on online shops in Germany and they are crucial not to get sued by some lawyers. It would be great to implement this functions:

On the shopping cart page and checkout page have to be a very visible link to the shipping cost page (Preis inkl. MwSt zzgl. Versandkosten) and to a refund page (Widerruf). Both are created as a normal page of course. Also on Product lists, like on a shop category page and on a product detail page a link right under or next to the price of the product or "add to cart"-button which links to the shipping cost page.

On the product detail page have to be the information of delivery time. Which would be a good option to put in on the product pages anyways.

Additional to "confirm the general terms", also approve the terms for refund. deckerweb already combined them both in general terms and refund page. But I'm not sure if both have to be separated. deckerweb do you know if this is 100% ok?

The order email have to include the complete refund terms and a link to the general terms and also the complete address and contact information of the shop owner. Missing is also a delivery time, selected payment option. I don't know, maybe this is already included in your premium email addon or can be easily done there.

@deckerweb, do you know other requirements, that are missing? They covered quite a bit already!

@jigoshop-team, I know it's a lot of crap what have to be done, but if you have a legal online shop for the German market right out of the box, you make a fortune. There is no good WordPress online shop neither another easy to handle online shop which applies to the German market out out the box. They are either old school like oscommerce or zencart, complicated like Magento or just bad like xtcommerce. There are 80 million potential users in Germany, think about it. :) Would be great to see some of the requirements implemented!

@alex: Thank you for your kind feedback! Really appreciate that :)

I am with you regarding these crucial features for German based ecommerce. Would love to see that soon otherwise I cannot use the plugin for a live site (laws!).

Regarding my translation file I just attached the refund to the terms words because German users might get some attention on it because it is displayed. Just to help them a bit to get their shop ready for the law situation...

Thanx for all further development and implentation of these features.

I am open for all things regarding translation and such...!

deckerweb - if you send us an email Ill get you set up on our bug tracker, then you can report any missing strings so I can patch them efficiently :)

Would you says its better to bundle these localisations with the plugin , or link to you via an admin widget, or from this site?

alex - I'd like to get you on our bug tracker too if possible :) we have no knowledge of german laws, so if we can work something out that would be great (even if its a german module which hooks in and adds relevant bits).

    Thank you, Mike!
I just mailed you at your contact form :-)

You can do it the way you want with the files. Attaching them in the package is great for new users to get them started. I would additional make them for download here to always get the latest version and patches because the files in the package are mostly one version behind...
For my German audience I have it (and numerous other WP plugins) always on my site for download. So what's best for you :-) You can also link to my server files...

    Thanx again!

Great to see that I'm not the only one who cares about a better German translation (as you can see here ).

Great work, Dave!!! Thanks a lot.

Edit: @ Mike: I would strongly recommend that you include Dave's translation in further releases/updates of the shop. It's much much better and makes a lot of sense to include it rather than only offering it on your website. It doesn't bother those who don't need it but is a great plus for those who need it.

Hey Mike, I just sent you an email. :)

  7. 8 Posted by jdaniel on 25 Jun, 2011 04:46 PM

@ Dave: I just received a feedback from my customer saying about the translation:

Insgesamt würde ich auch die Zeilenumbrüche noch mal überarbeiten, als Beispiel:
    Es steht derzeit:
Wenn Sie Fragen oder Probleme haben, können Sie natürlich jederzeit mit uns in Kontakt treten. Wir helfen Ihnen
    gerne weiter.
    Besser fände ich:
Wenn Sie Fragen oder Probleme haben, können Sie natürlich jederzeit mit uns in Kontakt treten.
    Wir helfen Ihnen gerne weiter.

Do you know if that's possible? (With )...

@jdaniel: I am sorry but this certain string is NOT part of MY translation file! I just double checked it but couldn't found it anywhere.
As for the line breaks these aren't therey anyways because they doesn't exist in lang files except the author is creating them explicitly via "br's".
Please give further feedback as where THESE above strings come from. I am really interested!
    Thanx, Dave :)

  9. 10 Posted by jdaniel on 27 Jun, 2011 10:33 AM

Yeah, I'm sorry... it wasn't a part of the translation. My bad! #problemsolved :)

  10. 11 Posted by deckerweb on 27 Jun, 2011 10:52 AM

@jdaniel: No problem such things may happen :-)

    Have a nice day all!

  11. 12 Posted by jdaniel on 01 Jul, 2011 08:49 PM

@ Dave: I downloaded the updated files from your website. Thanks a lot for these fast updates. It still seems as if there are some strings missing.

Like in the admin menu: Minimum Order Amount:, Free Shipping, Reduced Rate, Zero Rate, and Cheque Payment.
These are all I could find right now. (Not many, I know. :-) )

How about: "inkl. MWSt." instead of "(mit Steuern)" & exkl. MWSt. instead of (ohne Steuern)? I think that's more common in German shops?

By the way: In the confirmation email it won't display the € symbol. Instead it shows this "€ " which doesn't look very nice. How can we fix this?

  12. 13 Posted by deckerweb on 01 Jul, 2011 09:38 PM

Since I cannot edit my posts here I just post the new link to my translation file - the link just changed, all future files will be posted there! …and I’ve updated the translation for the whole plugin to version 0.9.8!

    have fun! :)

As for the strings with taxes I will implement this in the next few days!
And for the email messages there's still no way to change it properly so I cannot do anything here yet...
I hope Mike and team will implement a few changes to edit email messages and make them localizeable! ...or release some extension maybe... :)
